Close the month

Month end and check-in

Review the month together, agree it, and keep a reconciled record. A short monthly check-in turns it into a habit instead of a chore.

Review, acknowledge, reconcile

Closing a month goes through the same steps every time. Homora lists the estimates, unpaid bills, refunds and unresolved allocations, every member acknowledges, and a reconciled snapshot is published.

  • While a close is waiting, the figures are frozen for review. Any change to that month cancels the request with a notice, so nobody approves numbers that have moved.
  • Either person can withdraw a request. The other can approve or decline, with a reason if they like.
  • A household of one closes straight away, after the same review.

Unpaid bills carry forward

A bill that is still unpaid at close stays a cost of the month it belongs to. The outstanding amount carries into the next month as arrears, shown separately and never counted twice as spending.

  • Arrears show their original month and their age, such as “2 months overdue”.
  • They get a weekly reminder until they are paid.
  • A payment is recorded against the original month, and the closed month’s snapshot never changes.
  • A closed month is corrected with auditable adjustments, never recalculated. Reopening one needs every member’s approval.

A check-in in about five minutes

Once a month, a short guided check-in wraps the close in a reason to sit down together. A person living alone does it for themselves. Every step can be skipped, and your progress is saved.

  • Last month at a glance: planned against actual, and the three biggest differences, such as “Groceries were R820 over plan”.
  • Loose ends, then closing the month and settling up.
  • Savings progress, and a refill if your emergency fund is below its target.
  • Next month: bills before payday, known one-offs, and “Anything to revisit?”
  • One optional note of up to 200 characters, shown to you both at the next check-in.

A quiet habit, not a streak

Each household picks a check-in day: the first Saturday on or after the last member’s payday, or a fixed day of the month. Everyone is reminded on the day, at 08:00 unless they change it.

  • When everyone has finished or skipped it, the household sees “Checked in together”, with a quiet count of months in a row.
  • The count does not shame a missed month or reset with a warning.
  • Add an optional monthly “Money date” to your calendar. The file contains no amounts.

Reminders that arrive in time

Payment reminders are counted back from the bill’s clearing deadline in business days, skipping weekends and public holidays, so a payment can clear before it is due.

  • A bank transfer to another bank is reminded two business days before the clearing deadline; a debit order, card, cash or instant payment, one business day before.
  • You can change the default lead time, or set one per bill.
  • No reminder is sent once a payment covering the bill is recorded.
  • By default, a notification on your lock screen carries no amounts and no names.

Questions people ask

Do we both have to agree to close a month?

Yes. Every member approves, and the person who requests the close approves by asking. A household of one closes straight away after the review.

What happens to a bill that is unpaid at month end?

It stays a cost of its own month and carries forward as arrears, shown separately with its age. You are reminded weekly until it is paid.

Can a closed month be changed?

Not by recalculating it. Corrections go in as auditable adjustments, and reopening a closed month needs every member’s approval and is recorded.

Is the monthly check-in free?

Yes. It is free on every plan, because the habit is what keeps a household’s numbers right.
